When writing a source file from scratch, I stick to the 80 columns rule but when working with other’s code, I try to maintain the original scheme… unless I end up re-indenting the code to make it readable… which I almost always have to do %$^#@$# 🙁

The code does what it does?

Shorter is more readable but if you have work with people who have no lives they will obsess on the number of carriage returns or line feeds you have in code or a document or whatever.
