I've tried DropBox and SpiderOak. SpiderOak is far better for me. Here's the deal. SpiderOak and Dropbox start people off with 2 GB for the free account. BUT SpiderOak gives a whole extra GB per friend referral. So if any of you go to https://spideroak.com/download/referral/041b186b14349e60e2d7c3a31e4f2b5a to sign up, you'll give me an extra 1 GB of space. feel free! ;) I think Dropbox only gives another .2 GB. So SpiderOak gives 5 times as much per referral! And SpiderOak gives an extra GB for up to a total of 50 GB free. Oh, and the code you want to use for an extra few GB to start off with is "worldbackupday". That started me out with 6 GB. I only have 2.2 GB of space on Dropbox, and I started with 6 GB with SpiderOak!

And Dropbox is NOT secure! SpiderOak is. That's the short version. That's what all that "zero knowledge" stuff is about that SpiderOak talks about. If you want to store any sensitive info, you should seriously think twice about using ANY backup utility. But SpiderOak is the only secure one i am aware of. Wikipedia has a nice list of about 50 to 100 of them!

(And an unrelated topic for just 1 paragraph if i can evangelize here...) And if you are interested in a very cool internet currency, check out weusecoins.com which is a good intro to "BitCoins". I love it! It is a P2P crypto-currency. (P2P = peer-to-peer.) That means it is money that governments and banks cannot control (other than laws regarding it). But if you look into "fractional reserve banking", it allows rich banks to create money for themselves out of thin air! no joke! when we put our money in a bank, it multiplies their money by (almost) 10! seriously! BitCoin is a fair currency tho. And you can earn it by "mining" for BitCoins. Or just buy BitCoins at an exchange service. Sorry if i went on too long about this. :P

Well the coupon code doesn't work anymore, but there are a few around that do if you upgrade.

I love dropbox, it's more for syncing and sharing as opposed to backups. But i really like Spideroak too, minus the web interface, it needs work. You can use both in tandem quite well

Glad you like it, here's a simple nautilus-script (containing a .desktop definition to create a DragNDrop capable icon too)

Hi shantz.

1st of all, thx for all your effort you're sharing.

Maybe it's a little bit late, but I just stumbled upon this post.
Dropbox is nice, yes, especially for instant sharing content with (special interest) buddies/groups (for instance for music production)

However, I haven't installed the daemon for quite some time now, hope things improved in the meanwhile. But I'm fine with the web interface too.

## --> BTW, let me know if you use any other good online backup services

Well, "service" would be seriously exaggerated, but I love ompload.

Very simple, very basic CLI to upload (a) file(s) up to 1GB (!each!) of size. As it's NOT moderated and there are no useraccounts neither, this isn't a really safe way to store your files online. However, it is the handiest way to quickly upload foobar you want to share with someone right now! :)

Here's some sample output:

docter[~] ompload Desktop/public.asc
Progress for 'Desktop/public.asc'
######################################################################## 100.0%
Omploaded 'Desktop/public.asc' to http://omploader.org/vMXgwcg
Success.

While the coupon code works, note that you only get this free for one year, not permanently like the 2GB account.

@Smiley, yeah i just tried out Dropbox and it looks quite simple and easy plus the web interface is much better than spideroak. Also, dropbox seems a bit more reliable on face value as they use Amazon S3 at backend while spideroak have their own servers though this could mean nothing..
And thnx for letting me know abt the 1 year clause, didn't know that

I'm loving Dropbox - super simple. It just works.

On the other hand, the zero-knowledge mantra of SpiderOak is awesome.

Personally, I'm sticking with Dropbox for now still.

Note that this coupon offer will only give you 10GB free for one year according to http://www.storagenewsletter.com/news/business/spideroak-ex-subscribers-of-the-linkup
