vince, tar provides a much better handling for multiple members within an archive as compared to gzip, so this is why tar is used.

by the way, any particular reason you are using tar instead of gzip command?

Thanks Vince. Not sure if when I’ll get the time for a front end, but I’ve to finish the series also with a part about different ways to restore, though in most cases it should be as simple as just extracting the archives.
